SERVICE PROCESSES
A private account page will be created for you on the ISES website. You will receive a link with your username and password. Do not use any other login information than the one you are given. If you try to use your WordPress or other social login, you will never get to your page. When your edit is finished, the file will be uploaded to your account. Once it’s uploaded, you can purchase the file as a direct download. It’s a pretty easy system. Please read below for the ToS for our services that you have to agree to when you purchase anything on our site. If you have any concerns or questions, you should let ISES know before you purchase the file.
DEPOSIT: Your deposit will be on your account page, and you can pay it online.
Deposit, when required, is $250.00 or 20% of the estimate, whichever is higher.
For full novels, turnaround right now is 30 days or less.
ISES can review your revisions of our edits (within reason) when you’re finished. If you plan to have ISES do another round, either as a review or as a new edit, please do not use the REJECT button or change it back when you want to keep something we’ve changed. Instead, we ask that you leave a comment with “stet” so we know to revert it back to the original wording when we review the revision. It also helps us learn what things you like and what things you don’t for future edits.
MENTORING/COACHING: You will have a purchase button on your account which you will use to purchase weekly mentoring services. We can discuss a monthly or weekly purchase schedule. Purchase your service any time prior to the scheduled meeting. In the case of cancelations for either of us, we can reschedule as needed, and your payment will be applied to the rescheduled time.
Thanks for choosing us! We look forward to making your experience special!
TERMS OF SERVICE
Payment, or email confirming project should commence or Author should be included on the ISES calendar, constitutes Author agreement to terms of editorial service by Ink Slinger outlined below (Agreement):
Scope of work will be defined in email communications. Any work needed beyond that scope will require renegotiation of rate and time estimates. Author should inform Ink Slinger of any style preferences before work begins.
Author must disclose any controversial or taboo content. Failure to do so can result in cancelation of project and loss of deposit.
Prices subject to change upon discovering manuscript needs. Edits are single pass edits. Subsequent edits are subject to fees. Ink Slinger reserves the right to charge up to 20% more if unexpected issues arise that weren’t discovered during the estimate and sample edit review and quote. Estimates/quotes are not a guarantee of price. Author will be contacted prior to assessing the increased 20% fee.
Ink Slinger reserves the right to cease work if at any time during the service it is determined that the manuscript needs more work than the 20% increase will cover or if it is determined the manuscript was misrepresented to Ink Slinger, and Ink Slinger and Author will renegotiate the continuation of service upon discussion of updated manuscript needs. We try to assess manuscripts as best as we can, but it’s not always clear until we get to work. Sometimes the extra needs are minor, and the extra 20% will cover it. Sometimes we discover it needs an entirely different edit than we initially quoted for. If the manuscript needs more work, we’ll contact you to develop a new plan.
Refunds: Any payments received are non-refundable. A project may be terminated at any time, and payment will only be required for work already completed up to the date of termination. All work completed prior to termination of service must be paid at the agreed upon rate. Any completed work shall be delivered to Author upon payment. Deposits are non-refundable.
Refunds will apply to projects terminated by Ink Slinger if work has not begun.
Deposit: Deposit is $250 or 20% of the estimate, whichever his higher, unless otherwise stated. Deposits are nonrefundable.
Rescheduling: Once deposit is received for your editing slot, Author can reschedule once with 2 weeks’ notice prior to Author’s scheduled time slot without incurring a fee, subject to the next available time slot. This is to give us time to try to fill Author’s slot. If Author cancels without 2 weeks’ notice, the fee can be waived for true emergencies only, at Ink Slinger’s discretion. If Author needs to reschedule again, there is a $35 fee, and it is again subject to the next available time slot.
Work will not begin (or resume) until payment due has been received and cleared, unless otherwise noted.
Author assumes all responsibility for copyright licenses pertaining to the project. Author asserts complete ownership of content in the project and indemnifies Ink Slinger of any legal responsibility that should arise from any failure to license copyrighted content, any libel claims, or any other legal actions or claims stemming from the project. Author is responsible for all fact checking unless otherwise commissioned. If commissioned, fact checking scope shall be defined by Author and Ink Slinger, but Ink Slinger is at no point liable or responsible for the product or facts presented by Author.
Ink Slinger is not responsible for elective changes Author makes after the return of the completed project to Author.
Ink Slinger is not responsible for any rejected queries/changes by Author.
Revisions are covered within a reasonable extent, and only those revisions will be reviewed. Reasonable will be determined by Ink Slinger, but you can expect something along the lines of no more three new sentences to correct a single problem, but three sentences for every single problem would be unreasonable. If you add three pages, that is unreasonable. I consider any work that would be classified a rewrite instead of a revision to be unreasonable. These examples should provide an idea of what you should expect, but Ink Slinger is not limited to them.
Time frame: Editing time frames will vary from author to author. There are too many variables to be able to reliably give a timeframe. It all depends on how much work needs to be done, how quickly revisions happen, payment receipt, and current workload. Ink Slinger will always strive to give a reasonable time frame and will always keep contact with the client on progress.
Any deadlines negotiated will be negotiated in email and included as a rider to this agreement.
Elective changes shall incur a fee. Changes stemming from Ink Slinger error shall not incur a fee.
Minimum 1 hour charge unless otherwise stated. Subsequent time billed to the quarter hour.
Email negotiations are to be considered riders to the agreement. In the event of a conflict between the agreement and terms negotiated in email, the terms of the email shall prevail, but only to the extent of the conflicts; all other terms remain in force.
A copyedit should not be the final phase of editing. A copyedit is not a proofread. If Author purchased a copyedit, Ink Slinger strongly recommends a proofread, preferably more than one if possible.
Completed edit does not guarantee error-free manuscripts. Most books have four sets of eyes on them, at minimum, with multiple passes, in major publishing houses. A ninety percent error catch rate (which is itself a nebulous concept as we’d have to know how many actual errors—and not style choices—there are, which we can’t know) is considered acceptable under those conditions. Ink Slinger services are for a single pass and a single set of eyes. If Author would like to have more passes or more eyes, Ink Slinger is happy to do that for an additional fee or through one of the established packages. While there is still no guarantee a manuscript will be error free, each additional pass will certainly reduce the amount of remaining errors. Errors will also depend upon which editing service Author purchased. Ink Slinger’s error catch rate rate is very high—well above that nebulously determined ninety percent, but Author will not receive a refund if Author finds remaining errors. If after Ink Slinger has reviewed the errors against Ink Slinger’s copy of Author’s manuscript per a complaint Author reasonably presented to Ink Slinger, and our error catch rate did indeed drop below ninety percent, Ink Slinger will edit the manuscript again under the original invoice using the original returned manuscript file. Any additional editing requested to cover revisions Author made after the original edit was returned will incur a fee. Perfection is neither expected nor guaranteed. We are still human, and there is no such thing as an error-free book.
Style choices are not errors. Please refer to the style sheet or consult Ink Slinger before assuming an error.
All edits are confidential. Any discussion, reproduction, or distribution of the edits in any form, including social media, is not permitted without express written permission.
Ink Slinger will always maintain the confidentiality of Author, Author’s projects, and Author’s intellectual property. Ink Slinger will not distribute or disclose any of Author’s intellectual property without written permission.
Ink Slinger reserves the right to use: the cover images, Author name, project and series title or other identifying information, publishing company, Author website address, sales links, internal images of limited pages (typically for formatting and design examples), and any other promotional items provided for personal use in portfolios and marketing once the project or image is published and publicly available.
Choice of Law and Venue: This Agreement will be governed by the laws of California without giving effect to applicable conflict of laws provisions. With respect to any litigation arising out of or relating to this Agreement, each party agrees that it will be filed in and heard by the state or federal courts with jurisdiction to hear such suits located in Los Angeles County, California.
Although not required, Ink Slinger requests one (1) print copy of published project and one (1) ebook or pdf.
Mentoring does not guarantee a completed manuscript or a minimum level of quality. It is a teaching tool that is tailored to learning skills and helping to identify options for fixing a broken manuscript, not publishing.
Should Author disagree with any terms above, Author may cancel this transaction and contact Ink Slinger by email to negotiate necessary riders via email.
